Case Studies of Bandsaws

 

Identifications and solutions to common defects from manufacturers.

1.  Band knife cracks     Cracks caused heavy wear during grinding (sharpening) of knife blades, making indented sharp edge line.     Solution:  Use high quality band knife steel to lessen the problem.	2.  Serious burn in the middle of the saw blade      Burn caused by heavy friction of the band saw blade guides.      Solution:  Adjust the saw blade guide correctly after the saw blade has been well fitted in position on the band saw wheels.	3.  Overheat cutting      Saw blade teeth burnt and blade body heated due to heavy rubbing.  Saw teeth were blunted and over-used causing cracks in tooth gullet.      Solution:  Saw blade should be taken down for resharpening after about 4-5 hours of cutting.  Do not continue cutting when tooth sharpness started to become blunt.
4.  Tooth tips swaging defects      Tooth tip corners rounded (not pointed, not sharp).      Solution:  Use unworn swage die.  Adjust the swaging equipment to hold the saw blade at symmetric position.	7.  Tensioning defects      Band saw blade with dotted tension marks all over the saw blade body.  Good tensioning shows even lines on the blade surface.      Solution:  Use high quality saw steel.  Tensioning machine must be checked for good rolling stability.  The pressure roller must be wel grinded.	9.  Low quality blades cost you more.     Low quality blades easily crack and have to be discarded as scraps, while they still have wide blade body for more hours and are scarcely used.      Solution:  Purchase your saw blades from renown and reliable supply source.
